10 Years of the Güls Food Bank: A Strong Testament to Community Spirit

Güls: In a wonderful and warm atmosphere, the 10th anniversary of the Güls food bank distribution point (Tafel-Ausgabe) was celebrated on April 16, 2026, at the Gülser Weinhaus Lunnebach. It was a special evening for everyone involved—marked by gratitude, recognition, and a palpable sense of joy over what has been collectively achieved here over the past decade.

The distribution point was founded in April 2016 as part of Tafel Koblenz e. V. by Güls residents Jürgen Sonntag, Ilse Bauer, and Helga Schiffer. From the very beginning, the vision was clear: to provide practical support to people in difficult life situations—unbureaucratic, respectful, and at eye level.

Numerous guests from politics, the church, and local society attended the celebration. Among those welcomed were Peter Bäsch, Chairman of Tafel Koblenz e. V., his deputy Alfred Waurig, Treasurer Dieter Weiler, the local mayor of Güls (Ortsvorsteher) Peter “Wackeler” Ackermann, Peter Erben (CDU), Toni Bündgen (SPD), and the chairman of the local community ring, Berthold Schneider.

Special thanks were given to Pastor Lucas, who has accompanied the Güls food bank as a reliable supporter since day one and attended the celebration. Father Chigozie, who is currently actively supporting the food bank, was also warmly welcomed.

Tafel Koblenz e. V., which celebrated its 25th anniversary last year, assists around 5,000 people in the region through its nine distribution points. The Güls location is one of the larger sites and serves as a vital local hub.

A central component of the work of Tafel Koblenz e. V. is food rescue: every day, goods are saved from being wasted and are instead put to meaningful use. A huge thank you was extended to the many supermarkets, bakeries, businesses, and private supporters who regularly donate food. Without this help, the food bank could not function—simply put: it is the foundation of the entire operation.

The growth in Güls clearly shows how essential this work has become: in the beginning, around 40 people were supported—today, approximately 160 people regularly visit the distribution point.

The distribution takes place every two weeks on Wednesdays at the parish community center (Pfarrbegegnungsstätte). For many, it has long been a permanent fixture in their calendars—not just for picking up groceries, but as a place to meet and exchange ideas.

The entire initiative is supported by a strong team: 27 volunteers reliably ensure that everything runs smoothly. Particularly noteworthy: 16 of them have been involved since the very first hour—a true sign of solidarity and perseverance.

Throughout the evening’s speeches, one thing became clear: the food bank is much more than just a place to hand out food. It is a place of encounter, support, and often a much-needed piece of stability in everyday life.

In the end, one feeling remained above all else: genuine gratitude—for the many helping hands, the generous support, and ten years of the Güls food bank, which show what is possible when a community stands together.
